About the Role
UNICEF Nigeria is seeking a dedicated WASH Officer to support the planning, implementation, monitoring and documentation of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes that improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services for children and communities, particularly the most vulnerable. This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career professional to contribute to UNICEF's mission of advancing children's rights while gaining valuable exposure to international development and humanitarian programming in Nigeria.
Reporting to a WASH Specialist, the successful candidate will provide technical, operational and administrative support throughout the WASH programming cycle. The role involves close collaboration with government counterparts, implementing partners, UN agencies and other stakeholders to support evidence-based planning, timely implementation, field monitoring and emergency preparedness and response. The position may be based in Maiduguri or another UNICEF Nigeria duty station, with field travel required to support programme implementation and monitoring activities.
Key Responsibilities- Research and analyse national and sub-national WASH, health, social and economic trends to inform programme development and design.
- Collect, verify and synthesize data to support situation analysis, planning, documentation and decision-making.
- Assist in developing WASH outcome and output results, strategies, indicators and workplans aligned with sector priorities.
- Monitor programme implementation, identify bottlenecks, and support timely resolution of issues with colleagues and partners.
- Participate in monitoring, evaluation and sectoral review exercises, preparing minutes, reports and follow-up actions.
- Track use of programme resources and verify compliance with UNICEF rules, donor commitments and accountability standards.
- Undertake field visits and surveys, documenting findings and sharing reports with partners and stakeholders.
- Provide technical and operational support to government, NGO and UN partners on UNICEF WASH policies and best practices.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with government counterparts and implementing partners.
- Draft advocacy, communication and resource mobilization materials to support WASH partnership development.
- Support humanitarian WASH preparedness and response activities as needed.
- Bachelor's degree (First Level University Degree) in Public Health, Social Science, Behaviour Change Communication, Sanitary Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience in Programme Management, WASH, sanitation and hygiene promotion, water quality or water supply.
- Strong skills in proposal writing, report drafting, planning, monitoring and delivering results.
- Fluency in English is required.
- Knowledge of another UN official language or a local Nigerian language is an advantage.
- Experience with government partnerships, development partners, emergency response, field monitoring and data collection is desirable.
- Relevant experience in development, fragile or humanitarian contexts is an added advantage.
