About the Role
Flutterwave is on a mission to power a new wave of prosperity across Africa by building the robust financial infrastructure required for the 21st-century digital economy. Founded in 2016, we provide the underlying technology platform that allows businesses to make and accept payments securely anywhere in Africa. We are currently looking for an ambitious Senior Java Backend Engineer to join our innovative engineering team and help scale our payment systems to new heights.
Key Responsibilities- Design, develop, and maintain high-performance RESTful APIs and event-driven microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
- Leverage AI coding assistants and agents like GitHub Copilot and Claude Code to accelerate development while ensuring strict adherence to code quality and security standards.
- Create scalable database schemas and optimize application performance through effective JVM tuning and multithreading.
- Mentor, coach, and guide a talented group of junior and mid-level engineers to foster continuous professional growth.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional agile teams to deliver robust product features and architectural enhancements.
- Implement comprehensive automated testing strategies and uphold rigorous code integrity, versioning, and security compliance.
- 5 to 6 years of professional backend engineering experience specializing in Java, JEE, and Spring Boot.
- Deep hands-on expertise with Java 8, multithreading, JVM tuning, and backend performance optimization.
- Solid understanding of distributed database systems, ORM technologies, and modern data structures.
- Proven experience utilizing AI coding assistants to boost productivity alongside strong troubleshooting skills.
- Working knowledge of DevOps practices, containerization tools, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Familiarity with Node.js, Docker, Kubernetes, and Kafka is considered a strong plus.
