About the Role
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Methane Emissions Observatory is seeking a dedicated Project Coordinator and MARS Engagement Support professional to join our team in Nigeria. This remote consultancy plays a crucial role in accelerating methane emissions reductions, aligning with global climate goals under the Paris Agreement, and supporting Nigeria's national sustainability initiatives.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinate the implementation of the Nigeria Methane Reduction Programme (NiMERP) to assess multi-sectoral methane emissions across agriculture, waste, and oil and gas sectors.
- Facilitate stakeholder engagement and build local capacity for methane measurement, quantification, and mitigation among Nigerian government agencies, academic institutions, and technical partners.
- Support the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) by coordinating satellite-data-driven notifications and liaising with relevant stakeholders to prompt timely emission mitigation actions.
- Manage complex scientific projects, handling multiple concurrent workstreams and competing priorities across cross-functional technical, data, and communications teams.
- Master's degree or equivalent in environmental policy, management, political science, sustainability, climate policy, or a related field.
- At least five years of combined professional experience in energy, climate change, sustainable development, or environmental project support, particularly within developing countries.
- Demonstrated experience interacting with government agencies and managing scientific projects in Nigeria.
- Familiarity with greenhouse gas and methane emissions in at least one key sector such as energy, agriculture, or waste.
- Strong organizational, coordination, and cross-functional communication skills.
