About the Role

The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural relations, creating international opportunities and building trust worldwide. Operating in Nigeria since 1943 across Abuja, Kano, Lagos, and Port-Harcourt, we deliver impactful programmes in Arts, Education, English, Society, and Examinations. We are currently seeking an experienced Legal Adviser and Company Secretary to join our dynamic team and provide expert guidance on all legal, regulatory, and corporate governance matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the principal legal adviser to the Board, Country Director, and Senior Leadership Team on corporate, commercial, and operational matters.
  • Act as Company Secretary for British Council companies in Nigeria, ensuring adherence to statutory obligations and governance best practices.
  • Manage corporate compliance, dispute resolution, litigation, and externally sourced legal services.
  • Serve as the Nigeria Data Protection Officer (DPO), ensuring strict compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and internal privacy standards.
  • Build and maintain robust relationships with internal and external stakeholders across the UK, regional offices, and Nigeria.
  • Promote an inclusive, anti-racist organisational culture in alignment with the British Council's equality, diversity, and inclusion standards.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognised institution and Call to the Nigerian Bar (B.L.).
  • Active membership in the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) with a valid practicing licence.
  • Mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge or exemption certificate.
  • Proven experience advising boards of directors or senior leadership teams in risk management and compliance.
  • Strong organisational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills with impeccable integrity and discretion.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in corporate governance or membership in the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) will be an added advantage.
