About the Role

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, dedicated to alleviating human suffering during armed conflicts and emergencies. We are seeking a Legal Adviser 1 to strengthen the national implementation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in Nigeria and build strategic partnerships with key stakeholders.

In this role, you will serve as a trusted legal advisor to the ICRC Abuja Delegation, working directly with Nigerian government ministries, the judiciary, academic institutions, and civil society organizations. You will be instrumental in advancing treaty ratification efforts and ensuring compliance with international humanitarian standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze and advise on national implementation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), International Human Rights Law (IHRL), and related legal frameworks
  • Monitor developments in IHL adoption and IHRL compliance across Nigeria's legal system
  • Develop and execute strategies to promote treaty ratification and domestic legal framework development
  • Represent the ICRC Delegation in meetings with government ministries, international organizations, and civil society partners
  • Establish and maintain networks with influential government officials, legal professionals, and academic experts
  • Support IHL dissemination activities and organize workshops, lectures, and training events for government authorities, educators, and students
  • Provide technical legal assistance to national authorities on humanitarian law matters
  • Coordinate with the Nigerian Red Cross Society and other legal advisers within the ICRC
Qualifications
  • University degree in Law (required)
  • Master's degree in Public International Law, International Humanitarian Law, or Human Rights Law (preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years of professional legal experience since graduation
  • Expert knowledge of International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law, and related legal disciplines
  • Fluent English proficiency (written and verbal)
  • Proficiency in computer applications and digital tools
  • Valid working permit for Nigeria
  • Strong humanitarian motivation and ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
