About the Role
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Laboratory Supervisor to join our agricultural research team in Nigeria. In this role, you will play a critical part in supporting our mission to enhance food security and improve livelihoods in Africa through innovative research for development (R4D). You will oversee essential laboratory and field activities focused on nematode identification, sample analysis, and crop management, ensuring the highest standards of scientific data collection and laboratory safety.
Key Responsibilities- Perform precise nematode extraction using specified methodologies and identify various species for laboratory analysis and diagnostic testing.
- Establish and maintain IITA mandate crops in screen houses and fields, including culturing nematodes on carrots and plants.
- Identify plant, root, and tuber nematode symptoms and regulate populations to ensure optimal plant health during diagnosis.
- Operate and maintain advanced microscopes for accurate nematode identification and analysis.
- Collect, record, organize, clean, validate, and securely store laboratory and field research data, applying statistical analysis.
- Ensure proper labeling, tracking, storage, cleanliness, safety, and organization of laboratory samples, workspaces, and equipment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the unit manager or scientist.
- Possess a BSc or HND in Agriculture, Biological Sciences, Plant Science, Crop Science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated practical experience in field and laboratory activities, specifically in nematode identification and microscope handling.
- Strong background in research, survey implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and agricultural projects.
- Familiarity with data collection processes and adherence to standard operating procedures.
