About the Role
The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a premier 500-bed specialty hospital dedicated to delivering world-class diagnostics, treatment, research, and education across Africa. Developed by Afreximbank in clinical partnership with King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, we are seeking an exceptional Head of Molecular Genetics to lead our state-of-the-art department and drive clinical excellence in precision medicine.
Key Responsibilities- Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Molecular Genetics Department, managing departmental resources, budgets, and KPIs.
- Oversee high-complexity genetic testing, including Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), PCR-based assays, and molecular cytogenetics.
- Ensure accurate clinical interpretation of genetic test results and serve as the primary consultant for clinicians.
- Lead translational research programs, secure competitive grants, and publish findings in high-impact scientific journals.
- Supervise bioinformatics pipelines, ensuring secure genomic data management and compliance with ethical data protection standards.
- Maintain compliance with national and international accreditation standards, including ISO 15189, MLSCN, and CAP.
- Mentor and develop a high-performing team of geneticists, laboratory scientists, and bioinformaticians.
- MD or PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Genomics, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive laboratory experience, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role.
- Certification or fellowship in Clinical Molecular Genetics or a relevant specialty board is highly preferred.
- Extensive expertise in NGS technologies, bioinformatics, and ACMG/AMP variant interpretation guidelines.
- Strong publication record and proven success in securing research funding.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
