About the Role

St. Ives Specialist Hospital, a leading multi-specialist hospital established in 1996, is seeking a highly skilled and patient-centred Consultant Anaesthesiologist to join its multidisciplinary team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced anaesthesiology professional to provide comprehensive perioperative care within a well-respected institution known for excellence in women's, children's, and family health services.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring safe and effective anaesthesia delivery for surgical, obstetric, gynaecological, and other medical procedures, while collaborating closely with a team of dedicated consultants and healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-anaesthetic evaluations to determine patients' suitability for anaesthesia and identify potential risks.
  • Consult with patients and their families, explaining anaesthetic options, risks, and benefits, and obtaining informed consent.
  • Develop and implement individualised anaesthetic plans based on patients' medical history and planned procedures.
  • Administer general, regional, spinal, epidural, sedation, and local anaesthesia as clinically indicated.
  • Continuously monitor patients' vital signs and physiological status before, during, and after procedures, intervening promptly when necessary.
  • Manage patients' airways and respond effectively to medical emergencies, including resuscitation and life-support situations.
  • Provide post-operative care, including pain management and monitoring of anaesthesia recovery.
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, obstetricians, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation of anaesthetic assessments, procedures, and patient outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, patient safety standards, infection prevention protocols, and MDCN regulations.

Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
  • Fellowship in Anaesthesia (FWACS, FMCA, or an equivalent recognised qualification).
  • Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) with a current practising licence.
  • 3–5 years' post-fellowship experience in a reputable healthcare institution is an added advantage.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is an added advantage.
  • Excellent clinical, diagnostic, and airway management skills.
  • Strong knowledge of modern anaesthetic techniques and perioperative patient management.
  • Excellent communication, counselling, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make sound clinical decisions under pressure.
  • High level of professionalism, empathy, and patient-centred care.
