The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), a global leader in maritime classification, is seeking a dedicated Senior Surveyor I to join our team in Nigeria. In this intermediate-to-advanced role, you will examine vessels and marine structures to ensure compliance with stringent international classification and statutory requirements. You will serve as a technical specialist, providing expert guidance, administering port procedures, and championing safety excellence across the marine sector.
Key Responsibilities- Perform routine and specialized surveys on classed vessels, marine structures, and manufacturing facilities to verify compliance with statutory and classification regulations.
- Prepare technically accurate, high-quality inspection reports in a timely manner and maintain organized survey files.
- Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to junior and less experienced surveyors to ensure consistency and quality.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate survey operations while actively promoting ABS services and capabilities to clients.
- Engage directly with clients and stakeholders to resolve technical challenges and interpret complex maritime rules and guidelines.
- Monitor technological developments in the marine industry, recommending process improvements and safety enhancements.
- Minimum of three years of experience as a Surveyor II or at least eight years of engineering or surveying experience with an IACS member Classification Society.
- Tertiary qualification in engineering or physical science (minimum 2-year program), or marine/nautical qualifications with relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer.
- Comprehensive understanding of ABS Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and ship engineering systems.
- Strong ability to read engineering plans, analyze technical problems, and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Physical capability to meet rigorous demands, including climbing vertical ladders up to nine meters, working in confined spaces, and lifting at least 25 lbs. (11.34 kgs).
