About the Role

Slum and Rural Health Initiative is a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to improving access to healthcare information and services across Africa, particularly in vulnerable and underserved communities. Since 2017, we have utilized advocacy, research, and innovative technology to drive impactful change. We are currently seeking a talented and passionate Machine Learning Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team in Nigeria, Ethiopia, and the Gambia. In this role, you will build and deploy predictive models and data-driven solutions that directly enhance public health service delivery and shape healthcare outcomes for thousands of marginalized individuals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and deploy scalable machine learning models and algorithms to analyze public health data and predict healthcare trends.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, researchers, and IT experts to identify data-driven opportunities for impactful interventions.
  • Clean, process, and verify the integrity of large datasets used for analysis and model training.
  • Optimize existing machine learning pipelines and algorithms for improved accuracy, performance, and scalability.
  • Integrate machine learning models into web or mobile applications used in the field by health workers and community advocates.
  • Document processes, maintain codebases, and present technical insights to non-technical stakeholders across the organization.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Proven professional experience as a Machine Learning Engineer or Data Scientist, preferably within the health tech or nonprofit sector.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or R, along with experience using machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-Learn.
  • Solid understanding of data structures, data modeling, software engineering best practices, and database management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex datasets into actionable insights and practical technical solutions.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills with a deep passion for social impact and community health.
