About the Role

OBSIDIAN Capital Limited is a principal investment firm established in 2014 with a clear purpose: to transform African lives by creating companies that deliver sustained, long-term beneficial impact. We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Legal and Compliance Associate to join our growing team in Nigeria. In this pivotal role, you will act as our internal legal advisor, mitigating legal risks, ensuring strict regulatory compliance, and providing strategic legal guidance across all business units.

Key Responsibilities

You will manage corporate transactions, draft and negotiate contracts, and oversee all legal and compliance frameworks.

  • Lead the process for obtaining necessary financial licenses, registrations, and regulatory approvals.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate internal and external contracts, conveyancing instruments, and corporate governance documents.
  • Provide strategic legal advice on corporate transactions, real estate matters, and employment issues.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive compliance programs, including AML/KYC frameworks and data privacy policies.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies, external auditors, bank partners, and government officials.
  • Conduct regular compliance audits, risk assessments, and legal research to identify and mitigate operational risks.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate combines strong legal expertise with a proactive approach to corporate governance.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a legal position, with financial services industry experience considered a strong plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB); JD is a plus.
  • Licensed solicitor with valid Nigerian Bar Association membership.
  • Strong understanding of corporate law, contract law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven experience working with regulators and obtaining financial licenses in Nigeria.
  • Excellent contract negotiation, research, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite; familiarity with macOS Keynote and Pages is an advantage.
  • High level of discretion, maturity, and ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
