About the Role
The Geographic Information System (GIS) Officer will play a critical role in supporting Wildlife Conservation Society's mission to protect the world's largest wild places and their biodiversity. Based in Yankari, Bauchi State, you will manage spatial data, produce conservation-focused maps, and build technical capacity among field teams. Key Responsibilities- Support ranger and community biomonitoring teams in collecting accurate GPS data during patrols and ecological surveys
- Manage spatial databases, ensuring proper storage, validation, and integration of field data
- Maintain and update GIS layers for species distribution, patrol coverage, habitat monitoring, and threat mapping
- Produce maps and spatial analyses to support law enforcement, conservation planning, and community engagement
- Conduct spatial analysis of patrol data, wildlife observations, and conservation threats using GIS software
- Train rangers and field staff in GPS use and basic GIS applications
- Provide technical support for SMART-based patrol monitoring systems
- Prepare spatial data inputs for donor reports, technical briefs, and presentations
- Document GIS processes and lessons learned for organizational knowledge sharing
- Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's degree advantageous)
- Minimum 3 years' experience in GIS and spatial data management, preferably in conservation or natural resource management
- Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and GPS tools
- Strong technical skills in spatial analysis and attention to detail
- Experience with SMART monitoring systems (desirable)
- Familiarity with remote sensing techniques
- Excellent communication and report-writing skills
- Fluency in spoken and written English; local language knowledge advantageous
