About the Role

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is seeking a skilled and dedicated Field Supervisor to join our dynamic team in Nigeria. In this role, you will play a crucial part in our award-winning research-for-development (R4D) framework, helping to enhance crop quality, productivity, and food security across sub-Saharan Africa. You will work within a collaborative, pleasant campus environment, managing essential field and laboratory activities that directly contribute to sustainable agricultural solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform nematode extraction using specified methodologies and operate soil sterilization machines.
  • Transport sterilized soil safely to various screen houses and designated locations.
  • Maintain unit vehicles, soil machines, and laboratory equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Establish and maintain IITA mandate crops in screen houses and fields for nematode activities.
  • Regulate nematode populations and maintain optimal plant health throughout the diagnosis period.
  • Collect, collate, and accurately enter research data.
  • Safely dispose of laboratory waste, pots, and plant materials in compliance with biosafety procedures.
  • Ensure the security and proper handling of passengers, students, project documents, and equipment during transit.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the manager or scientist.

Qualifications
  • BSc or HND in Agriculture, Biological Sciences, Plant Science, Crop Science, or a related field.
  • Relevant practical experience in field and laboratory activities.
  • Proficiency in operating material-handling tools and equipment.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure in a research setting.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Prior experience in research, survey implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and data collection.
