About the Role

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is seeking a skilled and reliable Driver to join our dynamic team in Jigawa. In this role, you will play a vital part in our mission to enhance food security and reduce poverty in Africa by providing safe, efficient transportation for our project staff, consultants, and valuable materials. You will work within a reputable nonprofit research organization committed to agricultural innovation, ensuring that all logistical and transport needs are met to the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and timely transportation for project staff, consultants, partners, and visitors in support of field activities.
  • Transport project materials, equipment, and supplies securely to designated field locations and rural destinations.
  • Ensure assigned vehicles are clean, roadworthy, and maintained in accordance with IITA policies and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections and promptly report mechanical faults, accidents, or maintenance requirements.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle logbooks, fuel consumption records, maintenance records, and trip documentation.
  • Ensure timely servicing, repairs, insurance renewals, and licensing of assigned vehicles in collaboration with the administrative unit.
  • Observe all traffic regulations and maintain safe driving practices across various road conditions.
  • Support logistical arrangements for trainings, workshops, field visits, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Assist with loading and unloading project materials and maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Secondary School Certificate; additional training in vehicle maintenance is an advantage.
  • A valid driver’s licence appropriate to the vehicle class and a clean driving record.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional driving experience, preferably with an NGO, government agency, or corporate organization.
  • Excellent knowledge of roads and routes within Jigawa and surrounding rural areas.
  • Strong commitment to road safety, high level of integrity, and physical fitness to travel frequently to remote locations.
