About the Role
Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is seeking a dedicated Biomonitoring Officer to support our conservation efforts in Yankari, Bauchi State. This 13-month fixed-term position offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the protection of priority wildlife species and habitats in one of Nigeria's most biodiverse regions. You will work alongside experienced conservation professionals, utilizing cutting-edge monitoring technologies and field methodologies to generate critical data that informs conservation action.
Key Responsibilities- Implement and support biodiversity monitoring systems for priority species including elephants and primates
- Conduct field surveys using transects, camera trapping, GPS technology, and patrol-based monitoring methods
- Collect and validate ecological data using SMART and other field survey tools, ensuring accurate database submission
- Prepare comprehensive monitoring reports, field updates, and data summaries documenting observations and emerging threats
- Train rangers and community members on monitoring techniques and support routine patrol operations
- Maintain detailed records and integrate monitoring datasets with GIS systems for analysis
- Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Wildlife Management, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's degree preferred)
- 2–3 years of practical experience in biodiversity monitoring or conservation fieldwork
- Demonstrated proficiency with field survey methods and monitoring technologies
- Strong data management, analytical, and report-writing skills
- Fluent in spoken and written English
- Ability to work effectively in remote, physically demanding environments with commitment to wildlife conservation
