About the Role

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is recruiting a Biomonitoring Coordinator to support our ambitious conservation goals across Nigeria's priority biodiversity regions. This 13-month fixed-term position (renewable based on funding availability) offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to global wildlife protection efforts while working in dynamic field environments across Calabar, Cross River State, and Bauchi State.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement ecological and socio-economic monitoring systems in collaboration with the Conservation Impact Manager
  • Lead ecological data collection using SMART/EarthRanger, camera traps, bioacoustics, remote sensing/GIS, and KoboToolbox
  • Manage data quality control, storage, analysis, and produce scientific reports and donor-compliant outputs
  • Supervise and support field teams in implementing monitoring protocols and surveys effectively
  • Conduct capacity-building training for staff and rangers on monitoring tools, techniques, and data analysis
  • Collaborate with site coordinators and partner organisations to harmonise monitoring approaches
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations for conservation decision-making and threat assessments
  • Contribute to scientific publications and stakeholder workshops to disseminate findings

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in ecology, conservation biology, natural resource management, or related field (PhD preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years' progressive experience in biodiversity monitoring or conservation programmes
  • Proven expertise with SMART/EarthRanger, GIS, remote sensing, and field survey techniques
  • Experience in protected area management, preferably within Nigeria
  • Strong analytical skills and experience producing scientific reports and publications
  • Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written)
  • Ability to work in remote field environments and multidisciplinary teams
  • Willingness to undertake regular field travel within Nigeria
