About the Role
Action Against Hunger Nigeria (ACF) is a global humanitarian organization dedicated to ending world hunger, saving malnourished lives, and providing communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions. We are currently seeking a dedicated and dynamic WASH Engineer to be based in Maiduguri, with operations extending to Borno and Katsina States. In this vital role, you will oversee technical interventions aimed at improving access to safe water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene practices, while supporting community infrastructure rehabilitation and strengthening vulnerable populations' resilience.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise water and sanitation construction activities, including preparing technical designs, detailed drawings, and Bills of Quantities (BoQs).
- Collaborate with RUWASA, LGAs, and local stakeholders to implement robust WASH governance recommendations and ensure facility sustainability.
- Facilitate the selection, design, and construction of ground or surface water systems, including abstraction, storage, treatment, and distribution networks.
- Assess sanitation needs and implement appropriate systems covering excreta disposal, refuse management, vector control, and drainage in consultation with local communities.
- Conduct regular water quality tests and monitoring of targeted aquifers in collaboration with NIHSA and the internal technical team.
- Build the capacity of internal staff, partner organizations, local artisans, and gender-sensitive WASH Committees (WASHCOMs) through targeted training and mentorship.
- Coordinate closely with Hygiene Promotion and Sanitation Marketing officers to integrate sustainable hygiene practices into community and institutional settings.
- Prepare and submit accurate technical reports, progress updates, and facility mapping using digital tools like mWater while maintaining SPHERE minimum standards.
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or HND in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, Geology, Building Technology, or a related field.
- At least 3 years of progressive professional experience in supervising WASH-related construction activities, including water and sanitation infrastructure design.
- Demonstrated experience working within the humanitarian sector, preferably with international NGOs.
- Strong technical proficiency in drafting BoQs, conducting water quality assessments, and utilizing monitoring tools like mWater.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse community groups and government stakeholders.
- Fluency in English and Hausa is mandatory; proficiency in the Kanuri language will be a distinct advantage.
