About the Role
The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja, developed by Afreximbank in clinical partnership with King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is seeking a visionary Head, Molecular Genetics to direct our state-of-the-art Molecular Diagnostics Department. In this executive leadership role, you will shape the future of genomic medicine in West Africa, ensuring world-class clinical diagnostics, cutting-edge research, and top-tier educational initiatives within a 500-bed specialty hospital.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and execute the strategic vision for the Molecular Genetics Department, overseeing operational, clinical, and research activities.
- Direct high-complexity testing, including Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), PCR-based assays, Sanger sequencing, and molecular cytogenetics.
- Ensure rigorous quality assurance, compliance with international standards (ISO 15189, CAP, CLIA) and local regulations (MLSCN, NAFDAC).
- Lead translational research programs, secure competitive grants, and foster partnerships with national and international research consortia.
- Supervise bioinformatics pipelines, variant classification using ACMG/AMP guidelines, and secure electronic health record integration.
- Mentor and develop a high-performing multidisciplinary team of geneticists, scientists, and bioinformaticians.
- PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Genomics, or an equivalent clinical genetics qualification.
- Board certification or fellowship in Clinical Molecular Genetics or a recognized relevant specialty is strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in a molecular genetics laboratory, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role.
- Extensive expertise in NGS technologies, genomic data interpretation, and LIMS management.
