About the Role
Join Flutterwave as a Staff Engineer, Core, and help power Africa's digital economy. We're building the infrastructure enabling global digital payments across a continent historically excluded from the digital economy. As a Staff Engineer, you'll take ownership of mission-critical systems handling real money flows, where reliability and security are non-negotiable. This is an opportunity to shape the technical direction of our core platform while working alongside world-class engineers.
Key Responsibilities- Architect, maintain, and optimize core backend APIs including Ledgers, Acquiring, Payouts, and Identity systems
- Ensure zero-downtime operations and high availability across all critical financial systems
- Scale and optimize database architecture to support massive transaction volumes and major product launches
- Design and implement bulletproof idempotency mechanisms to guarantee money flow integrity
- Develop sophisticated routing logic for payment methods, seamlessly handling complex edge cases
- Lead technical direction and mentor senior engineers within the Core Systems team
- Collaborate with cross-functional technical teams to support mission-critical payment infrastructure
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline
- 8-10 years of backend software engineering experience, preferably with financial systems, ledgers, or payment gateways
- Expert-level knowledge of distributed systems and microservices architecture
- Veteran-level experience in database optimization, query performance tuning, and schema design at scale
- Deep understanding of transaction management, idempotency, and data integrity principles
- Proven track record delivering complex infrastructure projects with zero-downtime requirements
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities and strong commitment to system reliability and security
