About the Role
Street Child, a UK-founded charity dedicated to creating educational opportunities for the world's most vulnerable children, is seeking a passionate and experienced Education Specialist to join its Nigeria team in Lagos. This role will lead the design, delivery, and quality assurance of teaching and learning interventions aimed at improving learning outcomes and retention for out-of-school and in-school children, while strengthening teacher capacity through high-quality training, coaching, and mentoring.
Working closely with a team of Learning Advisors, the Education Specialist will drive the implementation of inclusive accelerated learning approaches, support teachers in addressing learning loss, and help ensure that every child—especially the most vulnerable—can enrol, remain in, and succeed at school. The role requires close collaboration with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) and a strong, demonstrated commitment to safeguarding and child protection.
Key Responsibilities- Design and oversee accelerated learning and street corner targeted instruction, focusing on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy.
- Develop and adapt training modules, session plans, and teacher manuals in consultation with LASUBEB, aligned with curriculum standards.
- Develop and deliver initial teacher training, refresher sessions, and ongoing on-the-job coaching.
- Introduce and monitor targeted instruction, grouping students by learning level.
- Facilitate termly Communities of Practice for teachers to share best practices and address challenges.
- Train teachers in high-impact strategies including explicit teaching and multiple exposures.
- Conduct regular student assessments using EGRA, EGMA, and upper primary assessment tools.
- Support lesson planning, classroom assessments, and instructional delivery.
- Embed inclusive pedagogies addressing language, gender, and disability needs.
- Collaborate with Learning Managers and School Management Committees on inclusive practices and infrastructure adaptations.
- Work with the Evidence and Evaluation Unit to use real-time data for continuous instructional improvement.
- Engage partners, school leaders, community officers, and local education authorities to ensure effective, sustainable implementation.
- Advocate for proven instructional strategies within state systems and provide accurate reporting to impact investors and LASUBEB.
- Degree in Education, Curriculum Development, International Development, Social Sciences, or a related field; a Master's degree is an advantage.
- Proven experience in teacher professional development, curriculum implementation, and improving learning outcomes in diverse or low-resource settings.
- Experience designing and delivering teacher training, coaching, and mentoring programmes.
- Knowledge of accelerated learning, foundational learning, inclusive education, and competency-based teaching approaches.
- Experience with Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) and assessing children using EGRA/EGMA.
- Experience working with government, schools, communities, and Lagos SUBEB or the state education system.
- Experience with payment-by-results programmes and meeting donor reporting requirements.
- Strong facilitation, coaching, analytical, and stakeholder engagement skills.
